Beginning Chinese Language Classes
The World Languages Institute at Bellevue College is a great place to learn Chinese. We offer one of the largest selections of beginning Mandarin Chinese classes in the Seattle-Bellevue area.
Whether you want to learn to speak Chinese for business reasons or pleasure, there's a class that meets your needs and your schedule. Our Chinese classes meet once a week in the evening for 8 to 10 weeks. All instructors are native Chinese speakers with extensive teaching experience.
Get started learning Chinese
The World Languages Institute beginning Chinese courses are designed for adults with little or no experience in the Chinese language. Our beginning classes focus on speaking Chinese, with an introduction to reading and writing Chinese.
Lessons cover beginning Chinese vocabulary and common phrases, as well as writing common Chinese characters. There are significant cultural differences between China and the West, so classes also include on-going instruction on Chinese culture and social norms. Lessons include how to:
- Identify and use the correct Chinese tones in pronunciation
- Engage in simple conversations
- Ask and respond to simple questions
- Write a selection of basic Chinese characters
- Read simple written phrases
- Begin to understand the differences between Chinese and western culture
